Co-Occurring Disorder

A co-occurring disorder or dual diagnosis is the presence of both a mental health issue and a substance use disorder.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) recent national survey on drug use and health, they reported that over 9 million U.S. adults suffer from a dual diagnosis. This can create additional obstacles when struggling with substance abuse.

We’re here to help.

  • Distinctives Of Co-Occurring Disorder Treatment

While not every client will have the same experience, there are several common symptoms associated with alcohol dependence.[2]

Alcohol Use Disorder

Alcohol Use Disorder is a medically diagnosed condition that is characterized by unhealthy levels of alcohol consumption. This could present as strong cravings or an inability to safely reduce or manage drinking habits.

According to the CDC, excessive alcohol consumption is tied to more than 140,000 deaths yearly in the United States.[1] What is often considered a socially acceptable habit can actually be life-threatening.

At Epiphany Wellness, we’re here to change the narrative. We want to support those suffering from an alcohol use disorder and help them navigate the challenges of sobriety.

Healing is on the other side of treatment.

Opioid Use Disorder

Opioids are a category of pain-killing drugs that include opium, morphine, heroin, codeine, and methadone. In most cases, these are ingredients in prescription medications given for valid medical or psychiatric reasons.

Unfortunately, these substances are highly addictive and lead to unhealthy dependence after prolonged use.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), 20% to 30% of patients who are prescribed opioids for chronic pain eventually end up misusing their prescription, either taking too frequently or too many doses at once. Of those people, 8% to 12% develop a diagnosable opioid disorder.[4]

Once a physiological dependence has been developed, it’s increasingly difficult to manage the substance alone, and the risk of overdose increases.

NIDA also reported that just under 50,000 U.S. deaths in 2019 were from opioid-involved overdoses.[5] The risk is simply too great to avoid treatment.

We can help you recover safely and manage your symptoms.

  • How To Identify Opioid Dependence

Symptoms of opioid abuse may not be obvious right away. Dependence and withdrawal symptoms can take time to fully mature in the mind and body. If you’re concerned for yourself or a loved one, here are some identifying indicators of opioid dependence.[6]

    • An inability to control opioid use
    • Consuming cravings
    • Chronic drowsiness
    • Changes to sleep habits changes
    • Significant unexplained weight loss
    • Isolating from friends and family
    • Stealing items or money to purchase opioids
    • Unexplained financial hardship
    • Lack of personal hygiene
    • Reduced physical exercise habits
    • Chronic flu symptoms
    • Decreased sex drive

It is possible to overcome a dependence on opioids and prescription medications. We can help.

Benzodiazepine Dependence

Prescription medications such as Xanax®, Klonopin®, and Valium® are intended to help you manage the symptoms of mental health issues.

Benzodiazepines (or benzos) are psychoactive drugs often prescribed to treat insomnia and anxiety. Benzos are designed to relax or sedate the patient. While successful in managing symptoms of these disorders when used responsibly, they’re also highly addictive.

Benzos affect the central nervous system (CNS) and, if misused, can decrease life-saving body and brain functions. This leads to an increased risk of overdose. In 2020 16% of all opioid overdoses also involved benzodiazepines.[7]

Prescription medications like these aren’t intended to be long-term treatment solutions. Unfortunately, it only takes 3 to 4 weeks to develop a dependence and experience withdrawal symptoms.[8]

What has helped you get here is not the answer moving forward. We can help you address and overcome your dependence.

  • How To Identify Benzo Withdrawal Symptoms

If you or a loved one has been taking a benzo prescription longer than a few weeks, you may experience the following symptoms if you stop:

    • Anxiety
    • Hypersensitivity
    • Depression,
    • Depersonalization
    • Uncontrollable shakes
    • Sleep pattern disruption[9]

This process can cause much fear and uncertainty. Don’t stop taking your prescription without talking to a professional healthcare provider. Epiphany Wellness can help you safely recover and manage your withdrawal symptoms.

Stimulant Dependence

Ritalin®, Adderall®, cocaine, and other amphetamine stimulants are some of the most misused substances in the United States.[10] While some are prescription medications to treat valid medical conditions, others are illegal, illicit substances.

But they all have one thing in common: a high likelihood of developing dependence due to the euphoric effects on the brain.

The temporary effects of these stimulants come at a great cost to your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. We can help you restore balance and facilitate long-term healing.

  • How To Identify Stimulant Dependence

If you or a loved one are struggling with a prescription or illicit stimulants, you may experience the following sign and symptoms of dependence and withdrawal:

    • Hesitation to stop
    • Inability to cut back
    • Relying on the substance to function
    • Severely reduced appetite
    • Fatigue
    • Restlessness
    • Increasing dosage amounts or frequency
    • Anxiety
    • Depression
    • Shakes or trembling
    • Anxiety
    • Sensitivity to physical interaction
    • Sleep pattern disruption

If a dependence has begun to take hold, it can feel like there’s no way out. Don’t believe the lie. Freedom and healing is possible.
