What Is An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)?

What Is An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Substance Abuse and Mental Health?

An Intensive Outpatient treatment program is a mid-tier level of care that offers multiple weekly sessions and regular access to support while still offering the freedom to live at home and attend to daily responsibilities. Intensive outpatient programs at Epiphany Wellness are designed to promote accountability as well as freedom.

With the support of our clinicians and providers, our clients will learn to identify and challenge negative thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns. Here, you will reinforce coping skills and learn to implement mindfulness techniques, and develop new, healthy habits that are aligned with your goals.

This is where the trajectory of your life truly changes. You begin to see what’s possible and how to get there. You can do it. We can help.

PHP Program Vs. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): What’s The Difference?

How Is An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) Different From A Standard Outpatient Program (OP)?

Who Would Benefit From An IOP Program?

An IOP program is an evidence-based intervention for anyone struggling with substance abuse, mental health concerns, or a co-occurring disorder. This level of care is a good fit for those who have already completed a higher program, such as PHP or a residential treatment program.

At Epiphany Wellness, we provide a wide range of interventions for both mental health and Substance Use Disorder treatment, from opioid dependence and alcohol addiction to medication management and behavioral health, our mission is to facilitate positive treatment outcomes.

What Are The Tangible Benefits of An IOP Program?

An IOP program is a structured environment that moves the client through an evidence-based progression of recovery. Here, you will learn practical coping skills, participate in group therapy, get 1:1 support in individual therapy sessions, and prepare your mind, body, and spirit for the next level of care. This is the phase of treatment where you learn and have the opportunity to practice all that you’ve learned and begin to restore the balance in your life as you safely navigate recovery.

Holistic Therapies: An Integral Component Of Epiphany Wellness Treatment Services

Leveraging an evidence-based and holistic approach, our clinicians will conduct a detailed and comprehensive intake assessment for every client. We will dive into medical, mental, genetic, and family history to determine the most appropriate level of care. This is how we can ensure that every client receives both the mental health and behavioral health interventions they need to effectively recover.

What Happens After An IOP Program?

Once a client has graduated from an IOP program, the next step is to continue treatment within a standard Outpatient Program. This is a reduced level of care that offers more freedom in your schedule while still attending treatment. As outlined by your unique treatment plan, ongoing support would include group therapy, individual therapy sessions, support groups, and preparation for aftercare.

Choosing The Treatment Program That’s Right For You

This is a monumental decision that is personal to each client. We recommend you look for the following hallmarks of care before enrolling in an IOP program.

Individualized and Holistic Approach To Whole-Person Care in NJ

Individualized and Holistic Approach To Whole-Person Care

Holistic and individualized care ensures that treatment will address any underlying mental health concerns in addition to behavioral health or substance use disorders. If this approach is not taken when implementing treatment, the risk of relapse and serious health concerns is increased.

Highly Skilled and Field Experienced Healthcare Providers

You don’t want to trust the success of your recovery journey to unskilled and inexperienced providers. Ensure you understand the qualifications of healthcare providers and clinicians who will be providing treatment. At Epiphany Wellness, we have hand-selected each team member at our Tennessee & New Jersey facilities to provide the highest quality care at all of our locations.

Evidence-Based Treatments and Therapies

All types of therapy sessions, both group therapy and individual therapy, must be structured to fit an evidence-based approach or format. We offer a wide range of innovative and industry-leading interventions to provide the greatest degree of practical support.

From Experiential Therapy, family therapy, and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) to Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Psychoeducational interventions, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Neuropathway Building, each modality offers a unique approach to mental health and substance abuse treatment.

Home-Like Environment

Recovery is a delicate and complex process. A sterile, hospital-like environment can add to the stress already taxing your body and your mind. The best place to recover is in a comfortable, peaceful, and distraction-free environment. At Epiphany Wellness, each of our locations has been designed to provide an optimal environment to nurture your recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intensive Outpatient Treatment Programs

What is the success rate of IOP?

Intensive Outpatient Programs are a highly successful and effective treatment for mental health and substance use disorder. After multiple medical and social studies, it was concluded that IOPs were as effective as inpatient programs, reporting reduced alcohol and substance use after treatment but without the residential requirement.[1]  This gives clients and families the freedom to continue in daily routines while still receiving dedicated support and intensive treatment.

What is the difference between IOP and AOP?

An IOP is an intensive outpatient treatment for mental health and substance abuse concerns. An AOP (Adult Outpatient Program) is primarily for severe and chronic mental health disorders only and encompasses long-term medication support, emergency interventions, and community integration.

What is the average length of IOP?

Each client’s treatment plan will be unique, based on their individual needs, and to ensure recovery success. Most IOP programs are merely part of a larger continuum of care, from detox and PHP to Outpatient Programs and aftercare. Depending on the severity of your disorders and your level of participation in treatment, treatment usually takes place between 30 and 90 days. The IOP program would only be a portion of that timeline, lasting a few weeks.
