What is PHP?

A PHP is a partial hospitalization program, also known as a day treatment program, or simply “day program”. It’s a level of care that delivers both hospital-grade mental health and addiction treatment during a large chunk of the day, while also letting you sleep at home to gain some semblance of individuality. This gives more structure than outpatient services, but more freedom and flexibility than an inpatient or residential treatment program.

At the Epiphany Wellness Hendersonville campus, you’ll arrive in the morning for a full day of diverse recovery work, before heading back to your home or sober living facility each evening. Mornings typically involve a brief check-in with the nursing staff to review vitals. We’ll also take any needed notes regarding your medication side effects or withdrawal symptoms.

After that, you’ll likely head to one of several groups that will focus on cognitive behavioral therapy or dialectical behavioral therapy skills. Following morning activities and a break for lunch, you’ll take part in some group and individual therapy sessions, relapse prevention educational modules, and family education to keep everyone informed and engaged.

When the day’s agenda wraps up, you leave the treatment center, heading to your own home or sober living house each night for dinner, reflection, and restful, restorative sleep. Being able to leave treatment to enter daily life each evening helps test new coping skills quickly, giving your care providers rapid insights as to how the treatment options are working out.

What a Day in PHP Looks Like

When you decide to enroll, you’ll instantly be surrounded by a healthcare team that spans several disciplines, from psychiatrists and nurses to licensed clinicians, case managers, peer mentors, and more. The entire treatment team collaborates to create a unified, cohesive treatment plan tailored to address the unique needs of each individual’s well-being

The treatment plan is aimed at addressing substance abuse, as well as the mental health conditions and lack of critical life skills that typically accompany the addiction. This means a wide range of treatments or modalities, and solid, evidence-based techniques.

Mornings will typically include some form of behavioral therapy, such as CBT, DBT, or ACT.[1] These help build the skills needed to address the maladaptive thoughts. Afternoon will often have several sessions of group and individual therapy, as well as educational tracks that build relapse resistance and psychoeducation. Each individual’s psychoeducation will be pertinent to their addiction profile and medical history, focusing on points like trauma, opioid therapy, or mood disorders.

Family sessions can be held either in-person or virtually, 2 to 4 times each month, so that your loved ones can stay connected to you during this challenging time. The PATH wellness method also incorporates tools that help integrate nutrition, sleep, and even movement, so that your body can catch up with your mind.

How PHP Works

The most significant benefit to PHP programs is that they are highly organized and structured, but they’re still considered outpatient treatment, not inpatient care, because you get to leave at the end of each day. Here’s how we do it at Epiphany Wellness Tennessee.

First, when you contact us, we’ll immediately initiate insurance verification, as this process can take some time to complete. After you arrive on the premises, we’ll do a complete biopsychosocial evaluation, we’ll review your history of substance use and mental health issues, and we’ll need some information about your current medications. From there, we’ll be able to build a deeply personalized plan for your intensive treatment.

Your success builds from a consistent, daily therapeutic rhythm. Each morning, we’ll have a safety check-in alongside medication reviews, as well as evidence-based group therapy modules that teach strategies for targeting incorrect thinking patterns, emotional regulation, and cravings.[2] The average afternoon may also include individual therapy, experiential or mindfulness work, such as art or music therapy, and practical relapse prevention skills that can be applied immediately upon leaving.

One of the biggest reasons that a PHP in Nashville is as effective as it is is the high level of integrated medical oversight. A whole residential care team helps track your progress, withdrawals, and emotional health, so that your medications stay effective.

Measurement is essential for staying motivated, so we’ll help you set short, weekly goals. The team reviews your progress with you and adjusts your care plan promptly when something isn’t yielding the desired outcome.

Finally, we assist with any transition planning you may need, whether it involves one of our programs or not. As your stability grows, you’ll need additional resources to stay on top of your sobriety, such as IOPs, support groups, and even sober living facilities.
