Frequently-Asked Questions About Aftercare Programs
What is an aftercare program and how does it work?
An aftercare program is a type of ongoing support plan developed during or at the end of formal addiction treatment. An aftercare program provides continued support through various forms of therapy, support groups, alumni programs, case management services, job placement services, transportation services, and relapse prevention planning.
Contact UsIs an aftercare program the same as treatment?
No. An aftercare program is not the same as detoxification, residential, or outpatient treatment. Instead, it provides support to someone in early recovery once they have completed formal treatment. If someone experiences escalating cravings or mental health symptoms that could contribute to relapse, they might elect to return to treatment.
How long should someone participate in an aftercare program?
It depends on how much support is needed. Some people may need structured support for several months while another person may need ongoing therapy or peer support for years. Recovery is not on a fixed timeline and every person’s needs are different.
What should be included in my aftercare plan?
Your aftercare plan could potentially include:
- Relapse prevention strategies
- Therapy
- Medication management
- Sober living support
- Transportation assistance
- Education or career planning
- Family support
- Peer groups
- Emergency steps when cravings or relapse risk increase
If my aftercare plan is not working, what can I do?
If you feel that your aftercare plan is not meeting your needs, please reach out to your treatment team immediately. Your treatment team may recommend additional support such as more frequent therapy, a different approach, sober living arrangements, a review of medications, or stepping up to a higher level of care.
Can family members be part of aftercare?
Yes. Family involvement can be helpful when it supports healthy boundaries, communication, accountability, and understanding. Family therapy or education may help loved ones support recovery without enabling substance use.
