Meet Steve Adkison, who has earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Merrimack College in 2010 and began his career as a case manager for clients served by the Department of Mental Health. Although the work was meaningful, Steve felt called to do more. Inspired by his mother, a nurse, he pursued a path in nursing and discovered a deep passion for psychiatric care.
He went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Regis College in 2017 and began working as a staff RN on adult psychiatric units at Salem Hospital. While working full-time, Steve continued his education, ultimately earning his Master’s degree in Psychiatric Nursing and becoming a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) in 2020—during the height of the COVID-19pandemic.
Since becoming a PMHNP, Steve has specialized in treating individuals with substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders, serving in various partial hospitalization programs across Massachusetts. His work focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and treating mental illness through both therapy and pharmacological interventions. Steve is dedicated to collaborating closely with patients and their treatment teams to create personalized plans that reflect each individual’s goals for recovery and well-being.
Steve’s approach is rooted in empathy and lived experience. He understands firsthand the importance of compassionate, consistent care with mental health. His journey fuels his commitment to being the person who shows up for others in their darkest moments—the one who helps them hold on and move forward.
Outside of his clinical work, Steve is a devoted husband to his partner, and a proud father to two sons, who are the heart of his world. In his free time, he enjoys gardening and spending time with the family’s beloved pets: Willow the dog, Amaya the cat, Stella the tortoise, and Jimini the gecko.
